University finds the ‘sweet spot’ for features and price-performance in Array load balancers
MILPITAS, Calif. – Mar. 8, 2016 – Array Networks Inc., a global leader in application delivery networking, announces today that Binghamton University, part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system, has selected Array’s APV series application delivery controllers for high availability and guaranteed performance of mission-critical student information systems and other infrastructure.
Binghamton University is one of the premier public universities in the nation, serving more than 17,000 students with nearly 3,900 faculty and staff. To streamline course management, enrollment and other functions, the university deployed a student information system across three front-end servers to assure access during peak periods. However, previous load balancers (an older commercial solution and an open-source solution) were encountering a number of functional problems.
Binghamton’s IT department determined that a state-of-the-art, supported load-balancing solution was needed to handle current requirements, as well as to expand load balancing to other network-based services in the future. The university undertook an in-depth evaluation of multiple vendors’ load balancing products, and ultimately selected the Array ADCs to support its critical student information infrastructure.
Since deploying the APV Series appliances in September 2015, the university has experienced minimal downtime for application access, and the IT team is able to perform maintenance on the application servers as needed without affecting performance. Load balancing through Array’s APV Series also offers protection against a failure in one server without affecting service and allows the Binghamton IT team to add more front-end servers as needed to support growing demand.
“Array Networks’ APV Series application delivery controllers hit the sweet spot,” said Tony Poole, assistant director for systems programming. “Another product was very feature-rich but came with a big price tag. Another was less expensive, but lacked some features that were important to us. The Array solution hit the ‘Goldilocks spot’ with the right balance of features and price.”
Long-time Array reseller iSECURE, a woman-owned IT security solutions provider, conducted the initial consultation as well as technical support throughout the extended evaluation. “Having a test virtual appliance allowed us to get comfortable with the various products and gain experience with them as well,” noted Poole.
“The greatest value, and one that our customers benefit the most from, is our relationship with our vendors and in particular with Array,” said Annette Warren, president and CEO of iSECURE. “We have over a dozen manufacturers that we work with and Array is a target partner because they have paralleled business practices. They understand that connectivity and productivity are critical components in today's technology tools.”
“Array is committed to ensuring that our customers can securely and efficiently access their applications,” said Paul Andersen, senior director of marketing at Array Networks. “We are excited to collaborate with Binghamton University to deliver a top-notch user experience and ensure the appliances can be used to support customer demands and mission-critical applications.“
